Teacher Feature Sunday: Volume 11 (Steamy STEM)

When I first started teaching I had never heard of STEM education before. We taught each subject daily and projects were completed at home. Fast forward a few years and slowly but surely I started hearing the phrase STEM education or STEAM instruction, and my interest was piqued. As a science teacher, I knew I wanted to start incorporating this in my classroom, but I just didn't know how to do so on the primary level. Well, this week I wanted to pass along some super fabulous STEAMY STEM ideas from some super fabulous STEAMY STEM educators. Hope you enjoy it!

There is no doubt in my mind that if you are a teacher reading this blog right now you have heard of Miss Frizzle and The Magic School Bus. Well, if you follow Bonnie Kirkley from @iheartsteam, then you can experience a plethora of virtual No Wheels Field Trips! Bonnie has created virtual experiences traveling to a farm, rainforest, outer space, and so many other places! You can travel pretty much anywhere because Bonnie was gracious enough to create an IGTV video demonstrating how she makes her No Wheels Field Trips! And what is even better, is that Bonnie has bundled these in her Teachers Pay Teachers Store so you can purchase the GROWING bundle (#thatmeansthereismoretocome:)! I know you'll want to give her a follow, so here is the link: https://www.instagram.com/iheartsteam/

The next STEAMY STEM educator I encourage you to follow is Brooke Brown from @teachoutsidethebox. I began following Brooke after attending a teaching conference with teachers in my district. Someone at the table I was sitting at asked me if I had ever heard of @teachoutsidethebox and I hadn't. This teacher's jaw dropped. She pretty much made me take my phone out and follow immediately! I'm so glad she did! I fell in love with Brooke's Storybook STEM program. This model is what helped me to overcome my fear and nerves about implementing STEM in my classroom. Not only that, but I realized how easy it is to develop cross-curricular lessons based on STEM instruction. For example, Brooke used the book The World Is Not Rectangle by Jeanette Winter. Students then had to use index cards (rectangles) to design their own structures. She truly has so many amazing ideas, so you can check her out here: https://www.instagram.com/teachoutsidethebox/

Finally, Chris Woods from @dailystem is a believer that STEM can be done anywhere, anytime, and about anything! He had so many ideas on his page, but the one that caught my eye scrolling through Instagram was his post on Super STEM Movies. In this post, Chris chose different movies that families can watch together and perform a STEM activity that ties right into the movie. What a great way to do something as a family while staying safe at home during the holiday season! Head on over to Chris' page so you can see all that he has to offer: https://www.instagram.com/dailystem/

I can't even begin to tell you how much fun this blog post was to write! I hope you find it helpful and resourceful. Remember, that no matter what subject you are teaching, you can always find a way to incorporate STEAM or STEM into your content. Your student engagement will skyrocket. Happy Sunday!
