What to do Wednesday: Calling All Students

Dear Lesson Plan Toolbox,

I know for the most part you deal with issues in the primary grades, but as a seventh and eighth grade teacher I was hoping I could get your opinion on something. My school has gone back to having all students learn online, which I understand and appreciate. However, my students simply don't turn work in when we have online learning. Heck, they barely show up to class. Our administration is very much in support of us reaching out to parents to touch base and keep them informed because many students are home alone during the day. I was wondering what your thoughts are about calling students directly. By the time parents come home from work, the day is over and they certainly don't want to handle things. My hope is that if I can contact the student directly, then maybe just maybe I can make some headway with getting work completed.

I can't wait to hear your reply!

Calling All Students

Dear Calling All Students,

We are so happy you reached out to us! Although we do normally focus on primary educators, we are happy to help wherever we can. So let's get started.

I absolutely adore your willingness to reach out to students and parents via phone calls because let's face it, sometimes those emails don't even get opened let alone read. Phone calls are a bit more personal and help you to convey your message clearly without the worry of misinterpretation which can happen with emails. So I would 100% support the phone call approach to communication.

Now, as for calling students directly, this is where things might get sticky. I would first suggest you speak with your administration and see if there is a consent form parents should sign before this happens. I would also look into a Google phone number because even if you *67 your phone number, the student might not answer. With the Google phone numbers you can set it to when you want to take calls which is nice. I do agree, that helping the student as soon as possible rather than waiting until the evening will more than likely produce better results with turning in work. Hopefully, once you get the student up and running then he/she will have the rest of the day to finish the task.

I hope this helps to guide you on your teacher journey. There are so many unknown factors this year that makes this truly difficult to navigate the best route. Your ambition and motivation to help students shows. Keep doing what you're doing and you should be a-okay! Please feel free to reach out us on Instagram (@lessonplantoolbox) if you need anything else.
