What to do Wednesday: Covid Crazy

Dear Lesson Plan Toolbox,

I don't know what it is but lately, I have been so paranoid about this virus. When I was teaching remotely I was okay. I felt protected and took the appropriate precautions, but now that I am back in the classroom with students in-person and online I have become paranoid of germs. You see, I have never been this way before. If I picked up germs from school, then I would fight it off with green tea and extra vitamin C. This year though, every time I hear a cough or sniffle my mind immediately goes to Covid. Is that student a carrier? Have I been exposed? Will I have to quarantine? I wash my hands, sanitize, and do my best to keep my distance from the students. Teaching second graders during a pandemic isn't exactly ideal. I can't seem to kick this paranoia and it is so out of character for me. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Covid Crazy

Dear Covid Crazy,

First, let me start by saying you are ABSOLUTELY NOT crazy! Our teachers are putting themselves in a room with students each and every day. You are bound to have thoughts that are going to lead to whether or not you have been exposed to Covid. As much as we try to keep our distance from our students, they love us so much they don't often give us any wiggle room. However, maybe have markings on your floor so students each have their own zones. Instead of having them come to your desk, try going to their desks instead.

I would also suggest you talk with your administrator. It sounds like these thoughts and feelings are stressing you out and it may help just to make your administration aware. They might even suggest an extra layer of protection such as using testing offices (the cardboard dividers) as a barrier for students. It may be hard to believe, but your administrators are here to help you and support you. Plus, they will probably offer reassurances as to the sanitizing that is happening in your building that you may not even know about.

Finally, remain diligent and use common sense. If a student seems ill or complains about a symptom that could be Covid related, I would suggest sending him/her to the nurse right away. Be sure to wash your hands as often as you can throughout the day. The one positive piece I have been reading lately is that the virus isn't living on surfaces as once was thought. It is mostly an airborne virus so hopefully, your school has a mask policy in place that they are adhering to throughout the day.

I hope I was able to ease some of your stress for you. Know that you are not crazy! This is by far the trickiest year we as educators have ever had to face. With each passing day, I keep my fingers crossed that we are getting closer and closer to a vaccine. Stay strong! Stay safe! Stay healthy!
