Sunday's Teacher Feature: Volume 10 (Halloween Picture Books)

We have made it to the week before Halloween! Congratulations! Wait, no...let's try that again. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Of course, Halloween is going to look different this year, but the fun we can still have is immeasurable. I love using picture books to get my students excited about whatever theme or topic we may be covering in class. So this week for our Teacher Feature, I wanted to focus on some Halloween and October books that your students will just love.

Our first picture book recommendation comes from Becca Foxwell at @foxwellforest. Becca found a super cute series called I Need My Monster! For the month of October, Becca suggests reading the prequel to this series, How I Met My Monster by Amanda Noll. Here's a quick synopsis of the story: Ethan meets monsters from under his bed. They each compete to become his monster by scaring him into staying in bed. Not only will you fall in love with this series, but your students will too! Here is Becca's link so you can see some more Halloween fun: https://www.instagram.com/foxwellforest/

Our second find comes from Sara (@bookoholicmom). Sara actually had a double find that she enjoys sharing during the month of October. Her first suggestion is I Am Bat by Morag Hood. This is a laugh out loud book is about a bat that loves to eat cherries. Yum! Sara's next suggestion, Frank the Seven Legged Spider by Michaele Razi. This story is about Frank the spider who wakes up one morning with seven legs. Frank goes on an adventure trying to find his leg all the while wondering if he's still a spider. You'll definitely want to check out Sara's link because she has so many more picture book suggestions: https://www.instagram.com/bookoholicmom/

Finally, we come to a fun twist on a childhood favorite we all know and love from David (@davidlorenzoillustration)! You've heard the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, well now you need to read Moldilocks and the Three Scares by Lynne Marie. In this story, Papa Scare (a monster), Mama Scare (a mummy), and Baby Scare (a vampire) live in a haunted house and have some scary experiences! There's even a surprise ending that your students will love! Here is David's link so you can give him a follow: https://www.instagram.com/davidlorenzoillustration/

Oh, but wait...there's more! Just as I was finishing this blog post, I came across a great find from Rebecca (@kindergartencreator). Rebecca has four suggestions for non-fiction picture books that you can implement in your classroom. The first is From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer and James Graham Hale. This book describes the life cycle of a seed. Next, up is Time to Harvest by Melvin and Gilda Berger which is about seasons changing and preparing for the harvest. Rebecca's third recommendation is Welcome Fall Pumpkins by Marilyn Easton. This book is a great introduction to non-fiction for young readers. Finally and similarly titled is Fall Pumpkins Orange and Plump by Martha E. H. Rustad. This is a great book that reviews how pumpkins grow, what we do with pumpkins, and what happens in fall. Happy reading! Here is Rebecca's link so can see so many more of her spectacular ideas:   https://www.instagram.com/kindergartencreator/

We hope you and your students thoroughly enjoy each of these stories as much as we did! Be sure to come back each Sunday for a new edition of Teacher Feature.
